Butterfly Blue-Pea Flower Tea ♥

Steam rising off my cup of Blue Water Tea ♥

Blue Tea? Really? Yes indeed really and it is super good for you as well as looking that little bit magical. It is about as moody and magical as a unicorn you know! Brew the tea and it will be a beautiful blue colour, add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice and it fades to a sensuous shade of purple. If you add some fuchsia leaves it will change to a bright red colour. Cocktail makers around the world are using this tea as a base for their creations and calling it the ‘Mood Ring Cocktail’ (see the recipe link below). You have got to love something so captivating as this ♥ I’m always quite skeptical when it comes to tasting things that look out of the ordinary. I won’t lie, it sat in my tea cabinet for a few weeks before I was brave enough to try it. But I am so pleased I did. I first came across Butterfly Blue-Pea Tea when I was gifted a test tube full of Blue Water Tea from T Totaler https://www.ttotalertea.com/ A naturally blue coloured tea using Butterfly Blue-Pea flowers, blended with Lemon Myrtle and Lemongrass. This is an extra special example of this tea, if it isn’t blended with something as fragrant as the lemon myrtle and lemongrass it can have quite an earthy or woody taste to it.

Where does this hail from?

The Butterfly Blue-Pea plants come from South East Asia where you will find the flowers in several traditional recipes throughout Thailand, Myanmar and Malaysia. The flowers are used as a natural food dye as well as this tea. It has been used for centuries in these countries but has only recently been introduced to tea drinkers outside of the indigenous area. It is commonly mixed with honey and lemon (to alter the shade of colour) and can be served both hot and cold.
