How to Make Rose Tea

Benefits and Recipes for Rose Petal Tea

For the rose, though its petals be torn asunder, still smiles on, and it is never cast down.

Rumi

Roses are one of my favourite flowers, so vibrant, sometimes fragrant and stunning in both bud and bloom. I have seen some exquisite roses during my time in Turkey and it prompted me to put this Rose Tea post together. Rose Tea is not only beautiful to look at it has an aroma that for me invokes memories of special times shared with my Grandparents. Times spent baking, gardening and learning about the flora and fauna whilst on picnics with two of my favourite people. Isn’t it wonderful how aromas can transport us back to another time in an instant? I love tea for a lot of reasons but this would be high on the list of reasons. One of the things I enjoy the most when drinking Rose Tea is that it tastes as good as it smells, which isn’t always the case when it comes to herbal type teas. Have a look at this list of great reasons to give Rose Tea a try. Let me know what you think.

Rose Petal Tea Recipe:

If you would like to use fresh rose petals from your garden, please make sure they are pesticide free. Alternatively source dried rose petals and buds. Gather a handful of rose petals and rinse gently in fresh cold water. I use a gauge of 1 small handful of petals per person.

Preparation

  1. Place the rose petals in a Small Saucepan over medium-high heat. Cover with fresh cold water and bring to a gentle simmer.
  2. Let simmer for 5 minutes or until the petals become darker in colour.
  3. Remove from heat and carefully strain the hot rose petal liquid into Teacups. Add honey to taste.
  4. Enjoy!

Iced Rose Petal or Bud Tea:

You can source dried rose petals or buds from your local health shop, market or specialty Mediterranean store. Perfect for those warmer days, this recipe will serve four.

Ingredients –

  • 4 tablespoons of dried rose petals or rose buds
  • 2 vanilla bean pods split and scraped
  • 5 cups of freshly boiled water
  • honey to taste
  • mint sprigs

In a large Glass Teapot or Pyrex Jug (one that can withstand the hot water) place the rose petals and buds if using and vanilla pods into the jug. Gently pour the boiling water over the petals and vanilla. Leave to steep for at least 30minutes. Once steeped gently add a little honey to taste. Strain into a large Glass Pitcher, Dispenser or Jug half filled with ice cubes. Add a few fresh rose petals and sprigs of mint to serve.

Rose Infused Black Tea:

This turns a natural herbal type tea into one with caffeine and a little more body. Most important to source a good quality loose leaf black tea for this recipe.

Mix together a cup or two of loose leaf black tea, several handfuls of dried rose petals and buds. Place into an Airtight Container, label, date and leave for a week to infuse the black tea.

To brew, place a teaspoon of the mixture per person and one for the pot into a Teapot. Pour freshly boiled hot water and steep for 3-5 minutes. This tea can be enjoyed with milk and honey as you prefer.
